A 6-meter banh mi with 150 fillings sets a national record at Vietnam's Banh Mi Festival in HCMC, attracting over 100,000 visitors.
Vietnam’s iconic banh mi reached new heights at this year’s Banh Mi Festival in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) with a six-meter-long sandwich that showcased a staggering 150 different fillings and toppings. The massive loaf, displayed at Le Van Tam Park in District 1, was awarded a national record by the Vietnam Records Organization for having the highest number of fillings in a single banh mi.
The second edition of the Banh Mi Festival, held from May 17 to May 19, 2024, drew around 100,000 visitors, doubling last year’s attendance. The festival celebrated the richness and versatility of banh mi, which has long been a symbol of Vietnam's culinary innovation. Nguyen Thi Khanh, chairwoman of the HCMC Tourism Association, said this year’s festival featured more than 130 pavilions, showcasing the best banh mi offerings from top restaurants, bakeries, and suppliers both domestic and international.
The giant six-meter banh mi was filled with an impressive variety of ingredients, from traditional cold cuts and pickles to unique fillings like pha lau (offal stew), scampi, grilled beef with lolot leaves, and salmon with lemon sauce. This variety highlights one of the key elements that make Vietnamese banh mi so popular worldwide: its incredible diversity of flavors and textures.
A representative from the Vietnam Records Organization emphasized that the wide array of fillings and toppings is what has propelled banh mi onto the global culinary stage. Originally a simple sandwich of bread, meat, and seasonings introduced during French colonialism, banh mi has evolved into a dynamic street food stuffed with ingredients such as cilantro, chili, mayonnaise, pate, cucumbers, and more.
Voted as one of the world’s most delicious street foods by numerous international travel magazines, banh mi continues to evolve while maintaining its core appeal. With its crispy baguette, savory fillings, and vibrant vegetables, banh mi has cemented its place as a global culinary icon.
The festival was a testament to the enduring love for banh mi and its role in Vietnamese food culture. Whether enjoyed from humble street vendors or gourmet bakeries, banh mi continues to satisfy locals and tourists alike with its rich flavors and endless customization options.
