Phu Quoc Sees 56% Surge in International Tourists in 2024

Phu Quoc Island sees a 56.5% surge in foreign tourists in 2024, with nearly 724,000 international visitors. New flight routes and luxury developments fuel growth.

Phu Quoc, Vietnam’s largest island, located off the coast of Kien Giang Province in the Mekong Delta, has experienced a remarkable increase in international tourist arrivals. In the first nine months of 2024, the island welcomed nearly 724,000 foreign tourists, marking a 56.5% year-on-year surge.

Key Drivers Behind the Growth
According to Bui Quoc Thai, Director of the Kien Giang Department of Tourism, international visitors to Phu Quoc account for over 98% of the province's total foreign tourist numbers. This surge can be attributed to several factors.

Nguyen Vu Khac Huy, Vice President of the Kien Giang Tourism Association and General Director of Vina Phu Quoc Travel, credited the rise in foreign arrivals to significant media coverage and international recognition through numerous awards. The island's popularity has been further enhanced by favorable visa policies, the arrival of renowned luxury hotel brands, and a variety of tourism products catering to international travelers.

Future Projections and New Flight Routes
The provincial Department of Tourism expects Phu Quoc to welcome over 123,000 more foreign tourists in the final quarter of the year, potentially bringing the total to more than 847,000 by year-end, reflecting a 52.6% increase compared to 2023.

Adding to this growth, Air Astana is set to launch a new route from Almaty, Kazakhstan, to Phu Quoc at the end of October, with two flights per week initially, increasing to four flights weekly by December. This new connection is expected to further boost international arrivals and enhance the island's appeal as a global travel destination.

Phu Quoc’s Tourism Appeal
Known for its pristine beaches and stunning landscapes, Phu Quoc also boasts a national park and an array of upscale accommodations, making it a top choice for international travelers. The recent growth in tourism highlights the island’s burgeoning status as a premier destination, with more development and expansion on the horizon.
