Hanoi's tourism sector is witnessing significant growth, with the capital welcoming 2.37 million tourists in May 2024, marking a 16.6% increase compared to the same period last year, according to a report from the Hanoi Department of Tourism (DoT). This surge in visitors, particularly from abroad, is a promising sign for the city's tourism industry, indicating that the sector is on track for continued success throughout the year.
Significant Growth in Tourist Numbers
Among the total visitors in May, the number of foreign tourists rose sharply by 46.7%, reaching 500,000, while domestic visitors increased by 10.6% to 1.88 million. This boost in tourism led to total revenue of nearly VNĐ9.2 trillion (approximately US$360 million), a 23.6% increase over the same month in 2023.
Historically, the peak tourism season in Hanoi has been from October to April due to favorable weather conditions. However, the strong influx of visitors in May—a typically warmer summer month—suggests that Hanoi's tourism sector is becoming increasingly viable year-round, a positive sign for future growth.
Promising Five-Month Performance
In the first five months of 2024, Hanoi welcomed 11.55 million visitors, representing a 14% increase compared to the same period in 2023. Of this total, 2.64 million were foreign tourists, an impressive 51.9% rise year-on-year. The city generated around VNĐ45.86 trillion (approximately US$1.8 billion) in tourism revenue during this period, marking a 23% increase over the same timeframe last year.
Despite slower growth in other economic sectors, Hanoi’s tourism industry continues to thrive, meeting key development targets. The city's service infrastructure, including four- and five-star accommodations, shopping, and dining experiences, has seen rapid improvement, further enhancing its appeal to both domestic and international tourists.
International Recognition and Awards
Hanoi’s growing reputation as a top global destination has been further solidified by multiple prestigious nominations and accolades. The World Tourism Organisation (WTA) has nominated Hanoi in two categories: Asia's Leading City Break Destination 2024 and Asia's Leading City Destination 2024, highlighting its appeal as both a short-term vacation spot and an overall top city destination in Asia.
Additionally, Tripadvisor has named Hanoi the World's Leading Destination 2024 and the World's Most Attractive Culinary Destination 2024, cementing its status as a must-visit for food enthusiasts and travelers alike.
Strategic Promotion and Marketing
Hanoi has made significant strides in its approach to tourism promotion, embracing digital media and innovative marketing strategies. The city has invested in professional marketing products, including digital mapping and drone imagery, to promote its destinations across various platforms. Furthermore, the Hanoi government is committed to developing new tourism products, strengthening cooperation with international partners, and continuing to grow the tourism market.
Hanoi’s authorities have also pledged to enhance the quality of services and attractions across the city. Efforts are being made to ensure a safe, friendly, and civilised tourism environment through regular inspections and improved destination management.
A Bright Future for Hanoi Tourism
The sharp increase in foreign tourists and steady growth of the tourism sector showcase Hanoi’s potential to become a leading global destination. With continuous investment in infrastructure, international recognition, and a strategic focus on year-round tourism, Hanoi is poised to reach its ambitious target of welcoming 7 million international tourists by 2025.
The city's efforts to enhance its tourism offerings—ranging from its rich cultural heritage to its world-class cuisine—ensure that visitors will continue to be captivated by the charm and beauty of Vietnam’s capital.
